Tablescaping

image2

Tablescaping is the linguistic blend of the words table and landscaping that involves the setting of themed dining tables in artful, decorative ways for social events.  The term was coined in 2003 by American TV cook and author Sandra Lee,  however the practice has been around for some time.  According to Atlas Obscura, competitive tablescaping has been a Los Angeles County Fair tradition since the 1930s and typically has a waiting list for entrants.  Thankshallowxmas tablescaping does not have to be a competitive sport as long as you "scape" with love and care.  Below are some of our favorite tablescaping tips and ideas to inspire your imagination and broaden your decorating palate.

Tablescaping in 5 Simple Steps

  1. Pick a Theme. It can be as simple as a color, a movie (think It's a Wonderful Life or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation), or, in our case, the Halloween, Thanksgiving, Xmas combo.
  2. Choose your linens. Treasured family tablecloth? or Festive placemats? Matched napkins or an eclectic mix?
  3. Choose your tableware (i.e. plates, glasses, silverware).  Match to your theme (or not).  Include one of those holiday poppers as part of the table decor, just for fun.
  4. Fill in the center with flowers & candles and conversation-starter items.
  5. Finish with drinks.  Colored-sugar-rim your glasses, add sprigs of rosemary to your seltzer, or splash some maraschino cherry juice in your water glasses. Make it festive.

Accessorize Your Table

A Thankshallowxmas themed tablescape can range from the totally bizarre (think live white mice, psychedelic pumpkins, and drunk santas ) to formal classy elegance (all black or white with candelabras and hand-lettered menus).  Here, jumbo cartoon glasses, tiny hats and superhero signage (KaPOW!) function as festive tablescape items that are also fun accessories and props for group photographs.  They make awesomely goofy giveaways as Thankshallowxmas favors as well.

Re-Purpose Those Family Heirlooms

Creative tablescaping doesn't have to break the bank. You know those quirky cocktail glasses that are impossible to drink from?  Fill an inch with colored water, float a votive and surround with tinsel and garland for an interesting centerpiece. Or, the family heirloom wine glasses that are too chipped to use but you can't seem to throw them out?  Place a drop of glue on the chipped areas, sprinkle some glitter, and voila, you have the foundation for a lovely tablescape.

Vampire Teeth Napkin Holder

Give your Thankshallowxmas place settings some real chops using cheap plastic vampire teeth for nifty napkin holders.  They also provide entertainment for after dinner conversation as it's really hard to resist trying them on.  Vampire selfies definitely do not suck.

Turkey legs also make the perfect place card, simply write names on each bag or decorate them with letter stickers.  After dinner (or even before dinner), let everyone rip into their turkey leg to find the sweet treats hidden inside. It is like a personal piñata without the work or the mess

Made from fir branches, holly, and ribbons, holiday wreaths are a relatively late addition to traditional decorations.  With their origins in the ancient world, connection to the pagan holiday Yule and the symbolism by 16th century Lutheran Protestants, wreaths were a way of celebrating victory or protection.  Today, holiday wreaths are often found adorning front doors decorating rather than protecting. Our Thankshallowxmas wreath utilizes all traditions both pagan and christian. Enhance your own holiday wreath with your own Thankshallowxmas themes.

Although no holiday gathering proceeds exactly as planned, a good host is able to transform unplanned and unforeseen events into Thankshallowxmas gifts with the art of Wabi-sabi, the traditional Japanese notion of flawed beauty. Broken toilet seat? No worries, just perform a wabi-sabi miracle and voila, you’ve just created a unique one-of-a-kind Thankshallowxmas decoration.
